Behaviour Principles and Core Values

At Stimpson Avenue Academy, we want to prepare our pupils for the life that lies ahead of them and believe that explicit teaching of outstanding behaviour is an integral part of this.

Our behaviour curriculum has been designed to build our pupils’ character, preparing them for a successful future. Through our behaviour curriculum, we teach outstanding behaviour through clear expectations, routines and opportunities for all staff and children to rehearse, model and refine these behaviours.

We want our pupils to understand how and why we behave and to have frequent opportunities to practise doing so, for these behaviours to become intrinsic in their day to day lives.

Our behaviour curriculum is designed to be accessible for pupils from Nursery to Year Six and is adapted to suit the needs of all pupils including those with SEND and other additional needs – we want every child to succeed.

Our core values at Stimpson Avenue Academy

At Stimpson Avenue Academy, our three core values—Kindness, Respect, and Resilience—are central to everything we do. Developed collaboratively by our entire school community, these values guide our daily interactions, relationships, and decisions.

Kindness

Kindness means thinking of others before yourself, acting in ways that make others feel happy and valued. It involves being friendly, generous, and considerate, treating everyone with fairness and respect. When we act kindly, we create a ripple effect that spreads positivity throughout our community.

Respect

Respect is about valuing everyone and celebrating our differences. It involves taking responsibility for each other, speaking and interacting courteously, and being honest, reliable, and trustworthy. Respect means listening and sharing views without rudeness or impatience, even when we disagree.

Resilience

Resilience is the ability to bounce back when things go wrong. We teach children to persevere through challenges, helping them build the strength to cope with mistakes and setbacks. Resilient children are more likely to take healthy risks, be curious, brave, and push themselves beyond their comfort zones.

British Values

The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values were reiterated in 2014.  At Stimpson Avenue Academy these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways.

Democracy

At Stimpson Avenue Academy each year the children decide upon their class charter and the rights associated with these. All the children contribute to the drawing up of the charter.

Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. The examples include:

We have a Junior Leadership Team which meets regularly to discuss issues raised in class council meetings.

We have a Head Boy and Head girl who are selected through the democratic process. The children in Year 6 are invited to stand for the positions and have to deliver an election speech to the rest of the school. There is then an election campaign run by all candidates. All pupils then vote democratically to elect the Pupils to Head Boy and Head Girl. Junior Leader representative are also elected in Year 1 through Year 6 through a democratic voting process.

Children also complete a pupil survey bi-annually with which they are able to put forward their views about the school.

The Rule of Law

The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days, as well as when dealing with behaviour and through school assemblies. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Service help reinforce this message.

Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make the right choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment and empowering education.  Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Whether it be through choice of learning challenge, of how they record, of participation in our numerous extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices.

Mutual Respect

As a Rights Respecting School, mutual respect is at the heart of our values. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect.

Celebration of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Stimpson Avenue Academy is situated in an area which is greatly culturally diverse, therefore we place a great emphasis on promoting diversity with the children. Assemblies  are regularly planned to address this issue either directly or through the inclusion of stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures. Our RE and PSHE teaching reinforce this. Members of different faiths or religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school. Children visit places of worship that are important to different faiths.

At Stimpson Avenue Academy we will actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist’ views. In accordance to the Prevent Iniative, any concerns of extremism will be shared in accordance with our child safeguarding.
